Term 2 Week 1: Journal Entry
Well, this week is the start of the real stuff to get ready for "common test" actually better known as Mid-year exams. We started the week off finishing the version B slides of plant transport and begun on mamalian nutrition. For practicals, we did experiments involving the transport vessels, namely the xylem and phloem and their arrangement.
I'll begin with the practical. I thought the practical was fairly simple compared to those we did last term because this was again another microscopy practical. Seeing the vessels was interesting, especially since it puts diagrams we've seen into perspective. However, I notice that the vessels are not arranged orderly, in a sense that the vessels are not arranged in neat rows but sort of littered around a bit withing the area designated for the specific vessels, namely in the pockets seperated by the cambium. I found that quite interesting.
For theory lessons, I found the lesson quite interesting though plant transport is quite complicated because of the systems they have to counter other systems they have. Take for example the cambium Strip. It prevents symplast movement and instead forces water to move via the apoplast pathway. These two pathways are systems initiated by the plant and the cambium strip is another system which blocks one of the other systems. This is why it was a little confusing. On friday, we started on nutrition as well. The beginning is simple but it will probably get more difficult as time passes. Hopefully I can manage.
All in all, prac 9 and this weeks theory lesson was a good start to the second term. Hopefully I can pull my biology marks up this term. Haha
